The Playlist: January

By / Posted on 30 January 2012

It’s a whole new year, kids. New opportunities, new ambitions, new music. If these four selections from the past month are any indicator, 2012 is going to be a fantastically exciting year for all of us. Let’s get things started with a bang!

Avan Lava — It's Never OverAvan Lava — It’s Never Over

This is it, people. This is the next big thing. Mark it. Avan Lava have everything in place to be the next phenomenon of upbeat party music. A production duo that have worked with the likes of Fischerspooner and Blue Man Group plus the sweet soulful vocals of TC (Tom Hennes)—coupled with bombastic live performances in collaboration with members of the Wooster Group—make up the neon synth disco powerhouse that is Avan Lava, and their new single “It’s Never Over” is sort of amazing in its pure revelry and excitement. Here comes the hype train, party people. Get on board before it leaves the station.

Sleigh Bells — Comeback KidSleigh Bells — Comeback Kid

Brooklyn thrash pop duo Sleigh Bells had lofty expectations thrust upon them for their 2010 debut, and it’s safe to say the band’s breakthrough commercial success has surpassed all anticipation. Their sound is one that is hard to believe didn’t already exist in the indie rock scene, especially after The Go! Team proved that cheerleaders and noise guitars blended perfectly years prior. With sophomore LP Reign of Terror right around the corner, the new single “Comeback Kid” is here to announce that Sleigh Bells are louder, faster, and cotton-candy-sweeter than ever. The increase in sheer action easily eclipses everything on their debut except “A/B Machines” and there’s an almost tropical vibe behind it. This is pure Summer ghetto-blaster fodder, which is why it’s kind of tragic the album is hitting in the Winter. Sure it’s still going to rock and turn heads, but will it last long enough to hit the beaches where it belongs?

The Babies — Cry Along With the BabiesThe Babies — Trouble

We’ve been wanting only the best for The Babies ever since seeing them open for Titus Andronicus in 2010. Cassie Ramone (also of Vivian Girls) and Kevin Morby (also of Woods) have a knack for good old fashioned lo-fi Americana. Unfortunately, their debut LP last year felt a little less than thrilling, which is perhaps why we were so excited to see Cry Along With the Babies—an EP of acoustic demos—earlier this month. “Trouble” is exactly the sort of recorded song we’ve wanted to hear from them: elegant in its unrefined simplicity. It’s hooky without losing the immediacy of a quick demo. More of this, please!

Xiu Xiu — HiXiu Xiu — Hi

Oh hey, it’s been over a year since the last Xiu Xiu album. That doesn’t happen very often. Don’t worry, here’s the first single from the forthcoming Always LP and it’s comfortable territory for Jamie Stewart: three minutes of industrial anti-pop and a list of colorful ways to describe crippling depression. Oh, Xiu Xiu, don’t you know we love you? We’re not saying you should stop being creepy and morbid—we’re just, y’know, sharing our feelings. Love you.
