A Book By Its Cover

R. Kelly's memoir has an attention-grabbing jacket, and so does a British teen thriller.

Soula Coaster: The Diary of MeSpeculation has been going around for a while about R. Kelly’s long-rumored memoir. While the book is still not expected until this coming Spring, the cover art was revealed this week. That’s it just to the right over there. Needless to say, the internet temporarily caved in on itself. Soula Coaster, the Story of Me. Wow.

Since there are no excerpts or other information about the book available yet, all anybody has to react to is the cover and… yeah… it certainly is something to react to. The silly pun isn’t even remotely surprising coming from the man responsible for “Feelin’ on Yo’ Booty,” “Hump Bounce,” and the famous “Trapped in the Closet.” The jacket, though—with its photo of Kelly in a tuxedo and Ray Bans keeping a bevy of unmanned boom mics arm-distance away and its simple Didot type treatment—seems custom designed to become a meme. We thought we’d get that ball rolling, so here are just a few ideas of other things this curious book jacket could be telling us:

On an ever-so-slightly-more-serious note, Walker Books in the UK also released the cover for their upcoming teen thriller Daylight Savings this week. Similarly little is known about this title and Walker is clearly banking on the web-exclusive interactive cover generating all the buzz for them. We think it’s doing a damn good job. Look at that! Mouse over it! Feel the water ripple under your cursor. We want to see in-store displays with this treatment on touch-screen displays or monitors with motion-sensing cameras. How long until we have books that actually do this? It would almost certainly undercut the seriousness of the story to wrap the book in a plastic sleeve filled with turquoise liquid. Maybe the eBook could still do this, though? Hey Adobe, figure that one out. We want some mind-blowing new ePub options.
