The Playlist: November

By / Posted on 28 November 2011

We honestly believed, deep down in the cockles of our hearts, that November would be a cold month of somber introspection leading into the holidays. Then the internet had to come along and decide that November was a month for flippin’ awesome music. Prepare to rock your gloom away and then dance yourself silly with our four favorite new singles of the month:

Dive — Sometime
Dive – Sometime
It should come as no surprise that we here at The Pop Aesthetic are fans of the shoegaze. The predisposed angst, the melancholy shifting, the ambiance of otherworldly awareness, the unkempt hair and thick headphone cords… there’s a romance to it all that is undeniable. Zachary Cole Smith of Beach Fossils semi-fame takes his new Dive project out for a first spin with this single that is a complete throwback to the days of Basquiat and My Bloody Valentine. “Sometime” carries a warm reverb that is both sensual and keeping the listener at arm’s length as if it weren’t ready for that kind of intimacy just yet. Oh Dive, don’t you know we love you just the way you are? Let’s write poetry together…

A Place to Bury Strangers — So Far Away
A Place To Bury Strangers — Onwards to the Wall
Speaking of the shoegaze, it’s been a while since we’ve heard from the self-proclaimed “loudest band in New York,” A Place to Bury Strangers. Well, Brooklyn’s favorite stomp-box designing trio are back with a new EP on the way called Onwards to the Wall and lead cut “So Far Away” shows that the boys are as forceful and noncha-flippin’-lant as ever. It’s loud, it’s brash, it’s not doing this for you, man, whatever, just get off our back already.

Lemon Demon — Really Cool Wig
Lemon Demon — Really Cool Wig
Goodness gracious, this may just be the greatest song we’ve heard all year. Such simplicity, such direct intent, such lack of shame. Neil Cicierega should be an example to songwriters around the world to never ever be afraid of a seemingly bad idea. “Really Cool Wig” should be a total throwaway of a pop song, but instead it is completely captivating. Besides, the mental image of dancing at a party with Mos Def is far too fantastic to ignore. And honestly, that wig does sound pretty badass…

Holy Ghost! — I Wanted To Tell Her (Ministry cover featuring Nancy Whang & Juan MacLean)
Holy Ghost! — I Wanted to Tell Her
Remember Ministry? Most people with any memory of the Chicago band know them as pioneers of industrial metal, predecessors of Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson. Back in the mid-1980′s, though, Ministry was decidedly more of a synthpop band, settling comfortably in the new wave dance scene that would later be romanticized by indie producers of today. It’s only fitting, then, that three of the biggest names on DFA, arguably the most well-known indie dance label of today, should join forces to cover one of Ministry’s earliest singles. Holy Ghost! (who we love) welcome LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang and Juan MacLean for this sincere and funky quasi-update of the 1983 classic. As an added bonus, they even did a spot-on redux of the original With Sympathy sleeve art. With Holy Ghost! and the Cool Kids, Moutain Dew’s Green Label Sound is quickly becoming the place to go for fun tunes.
