Hey! Listen! – Nintendo vs Sega 2

Remix Artist Collective do another EP of classic videogame remixes. We do another backflip in excitement.

By / Posted on 04 July 2011

Back in 2008, the Remix Artist Collective (RAC) made up of André Allen Anjos and Andrew Maury released a four-track digital EP of original dancefloor-ready remixes of tracks from Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda and Sonic the Hedgehog. While the duo had already produced a number of single track remixes for popular indie bands, Nintendo vs Sega EP was their first collection released as RAC and became immensely popular throughout a variety of hipster scenes.

Now it’s 2011, and things have changed. No longer quite the hungry upstarts they were a few years ago, RAC are in-demand producers, responsible for original music for film and television, as well as remixes for bands like Bloc Party, The Gossip, Washed Out, Surfer Blood, Anamanaguchi, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Peter Bjorn & John, Holy Ghost!, and U2, among so many others. They have a remix on the official soundtrack for 30 Rock. Retro gaming must still be in their blood though, as RAC (now a trio, adding Karl Kling to the mix) have released a follow up EP, Nintendo vs Sega 2.

More than just a new batch of high-octane videogame remixes, this collection demonstrates a greater control over musical emotion. Sonic 2′s “Chemical Plant Zone” is transformed into a lush, dreamy discotheque while the Pokémon theme becomes a warrior’s victorious welcome home party. Double Dragon could easily background a training montage for a 1980′s movie about teaching hepcats to rebel against authority through dance, and hell, there’s a Duck Hunt track, complete with the guys of RAC complaining about how the light gun doesn’t work.

It’s mostly André this time, and Andrew doesn’t take credit for any of these seven tracks, but it’s still an RAC release, which means it’s still rock solid and better than most other producers out there these days. You can stream the entirely sweet Nintendo vs Sega 2 EP just above and download it for free, along with an excellent chunk of the rest of the RAC catalog, at their website.
