Four hot new tracks to heat up your summer!

By / Posted on 27 June 2011

Summer is upon us, a time to relax on the beach and daydream about, well, whatever. Outdoor music festivals are starting to gear up for the season, and, most importantly, kids are dancing again. It is with all of that enthusiasm for the season of music-that-refuses-to-not-be-fun that we bring you our four favorite new tracks of the month: three from favorite artists gearing up for fresh new releases, and one from an exciting new upstart with a promising pedigree:

The Cool Kids - Swimsuits (ft. Mayer Hawthorne)The Cool Kids - Swimsuits

Chicago’s favorite emcees The Cool Kids are back, and they’re finally releasing a full-length LP this summer (on Mountain Dew’s Green Label Sound. Whatever, it’s a The Cool Kids full-length, we’ll take it). “Swimsuits” is an all-too-brief reminder of the sweet flow Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks have and shows how far Inglish’s production chops have come since their “Bake Sale” EP. Hawthorne’s smooth hook makes us want to run down to the beach with a ghetto blaster and scope out the pretty ladies. The album drops in a couple of weeks, and this little taste has us ravenous for more.

VHS or Beta - I Found A ReasonVHS or Beta - Diamonds and Death

One of the leading bands of the dance-punk movement of the early aughts is back with a long-awaited new album. On the new single “I Found A Reason,” VHS or Beta take us on a 1980′s starship to journey through the stars and dance to our hearts’ content. Like master designers, the duo treats negative space as its own voice, with just as much importance as any other instrument so that even the quiet moments can be a raucous party.

Fall on Your Own Sword - The First Time I Saw JupiterFall on Your Own Sword - Another Earth

The film Another Earth already looks incredibly cool, with its romantic what-would-happen-if vibe of an alternate world with an alternate you, but the element that’s caught the most of our attention is the original soundtrack by Brooklyn band Fall On Your Own Sword. The soundtrack is the duo’s first noteworthy output, but they’ve already got serious industry clout as member Philip Mossman was a founding member of LCD Soundsystem and his friend and indie music tastemaker James Murphy has called the band “quite possibly the coolest thing on the planet at the moment.” “The First Time I Saw Jupiter” carries a quiet intensity that is both uneasy and compelling, driving and worrisome.

Björk - CrystallineBjörk - Biophilia

Björk’s upcoming Biophilia may be more of an experience than conventional pop music as it is being released as an iPad app, but that doesn’t mean the iPad-less can’t enjoy its sounds without gazing into a large touch screen. “Crystalline” starts off reminding us how much we’ve missed Björk, with gently assertive percussion that plays perfectly off of her signature controlled wails, like a dolphin rapt with ecstasy. Björk is all-too-happy to lull us into this comfort zone for 90% of the song, but the last 10%, where the drums go into overdrive, are pure freak-out. Man, have we ever missed Björk! Almost makes you want to go out and buy an iPad to see what part of this song you’re missing out on.
