Hey! Listen! – Future, Towards the Edge of Forever

Future Towards the Edge of ForeverWe’ve been longtime supporters of the chip music scene with prominent features in the past at both Nerve and Pitchfork. It certainly helps that we were raised with a fascination in 8-bit videogames and operate in the New York City area, where a great deal of the recent chip revolution has come to grow. In the past few years, many prominent chip musicians have seen their exposure grow thanks to being featured in popular videogames. Disasterpeace wrote original songs for Drawn to Life, Bit Shifter, Nullsleep and Bubblyfish all had music in the BIT.TRIP series of games and Anamanaguchi wrote the LP-length original soundtrack for the official Scott Pilgrim vs. the World videogame.

They’ve all been one-upped in terms of media exposure, though, by the young upstarts of Starscream (whom, it should be pointed out, are good friends with most of the aforementioned musicians). While everyone else was lending their videogame-inspired music to videogames, Starscream broke into headline-grabbing television by licensing their music to MTV’s localization of the controversial teen drama Skins.

We’ve written about Starscream before. The duo of Damon Hardjowirogo (Game Boy and Commodore 64) and George Stroud (drums) were responsible for our favorite musical releases of both 2009 and 2010 with the EPs Future, and it Doesn’t Work and The Space Years, respectively. Another EP, Pegasus, was released earlier this year, but more importantly is today’s release of their debut LP Future, Towards the Edge of Forever. LPs are a format most chip musicians avoid, perhaps out of fear that the style of music does not lend itself to more than a few minutes entertainment.

Starscream are not messing around. As a true double LP (limited edition vinyl available through Insound while supplies last) Future, Towards the Edge of Forever is roughly 50 minutes of progressive chip rock, the kind of record Yes would have made had they access to Game Boys.

The band’s sound hasn’t changed much in the past two years, but it has grown considerably more psychedelic in terms of sheer spaciousness. Future, Towards the Edge of Forever sounds positively massive. Huge. Immense. Ginormous. It’s the sort of music that makes the listener raise their arms upward as though they were conductors of the stars and the heavens.

Stream the entire album to the left, buy it on their Bandcamp or through iTunes. If you happen to be in the New York City area next week, the band will be playing what is likely to be a thrilling set at the fifth annual Blip Festival. If you can’t make it out but will be near a computer, WMFU will be broadcasting live from the festival. We’ll be there too, so come by and say hello. We’ll be the ones in the front row, conducting the stars.
