The Playlist: March

These four songs have been filling our headphones all month long.

By / Posted on 30 March 2011

There’s a lot of excellent music coming out these days (despite whatever it is the Strokes just did). All sorts of wonderful records are just on the horizon, filling our eyes with stars and dreams. As such, we thought we’d make our last post of the month a spotlight for the songs that we’ve loved so dearly these past few weeks, the songs that keep our cheeks cheery and our pupils on the calendar in anticipation for more:

TV on the Radio – Will Do

After a well-deserved hiatus and a few interesting solo projects, TV on the Radio are back. The question is, which TVOTR is this? The indie-rock destroyer  ”New Health Rock,” the catchy-but-somewhat-confused “Golden Age,” the all-over-the-map “I Was a Lover,” the scene-defying “Staring at the Sun,” or something new altogether? “Will Do,” the first single from Nine Types of Light, definitely ties back to the band’s most recent material (notably Dear Science, cut “DLZ”), but with a tenderness that seemed to be missing for a while. Smooth and undeniably catchy, “Will Do” is a welcome return of one of the most definitive bands of the past decade.

13 & God – Old Age

Heady electronic supergroup 13 & God (formed by members of the Notwist and Themselves) have returned, and this new single is wonderfully steady. That may be an odd word to describe a song’s sound, but 13 & God are an odd group. With canned drumbeats, bright acoustic guitar plucks, and fuzzy atmosphere, “Old Age” would fit in perfectly with one hit wonders of the 1990′s like White Town and Sneaker Pimps. 13 & God’s self-titled debut in 2005 was marvelous, but flew under the radar due to lack of a short, punchy, accessible single. With “Old Age” as their catchiest tune to date, things are looking up for Own Your Ghost, which releases in May.

Metronomy – The Look

The anticipation is high for Metronomy’s third album, which is also their first as a full band. No longer required to make all the recorded sounds himself, Joseph Mount comes across more confident than ever, with his voice noticeably more assured and determined. Most surprisingly, the instrumentation is decidedly minimal compared to Nights Out, with only a few voices that never really stray from the simple beat they start out with. This is the sort of song Young Marble Giants would have made if they’d frequented dance halls.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults – Helium

Mark our words, Letting Up Despite Great Faults are going to be big. Their 2006 Movement EP was sublime and the 2009 self-titled LP did not disappoint in any way. The kind of warm shoegaze that makes teenage girls jump on their bed, Letting Up… produce exactly the sort of introspective electronic pop that melts our hearts and fills our lives with hope. The band tweeted their new single “Helium” just before the SXSW Festival and took it down mere hours later, making its lush atmosphere all the more mysterious and lustful in its inexplicably forbidden state.
