Wonder Woman gets her own collection of MAC makeup

By / Posted on 26 January 2011

Try as we may to fight it, ours is a society ruled by public image. When we’re not rashly judging someone on first appearances, we are comparing the things people say to the way they present themselves physically. Body language, fashion, grooming… cosmetics are key, and we all know that the right look can affect the wearer’s self-image and their confidence. Controlling your public perception as a woman is a constant tightrope walk, maintaining perfect balance between extremes where the slightest nudge in any direction can send entirely the wrong message.

Makeup itself has always been a double-edged sword for women. Controlled-but-intentioned application has long been a necessity for the well-respected business woman to be noticed as a figure of power and respect without losing femininity. Dramatic and borderline gaudy applications are requisite for pop stars, models and fashionistas in order to stand out in a sea of similarly beautiful people. Girls want makeup so they can look older, women want it so they can look younger. Makeup is so many things to so many people, and it’s a tremendous business that only serves to confuse countless men who have been dragged into a Sephora only to be found seizing in the corner moments later, overwhelmed by the variety of different pink eyeshadows that occupy 0.0125% of the retailer’s merchandise. If only there were one icon in the world of makeup that could unite these wildly varying demographics of women…

Wonder Woman by Mike Allred

Oh, hey! Wonder Woman! She’s never gone out of style, regardless of whatever inane personality shift they have going on in her comic book. Vintage Wonder Woman is always a popular theme for the alternative-chic female, as evidenced by decades of Wonder Woman t-shirts, notebooks and underwear worn with only the slightest hint of irony by customers of both ends of the mall, Macy’s and Hot Topic. Simultaneously a cartoonish representation of a cleaner, idealized time of life and a universal symbol of self-assured female empowerment, Wonder Woman has long been embraced by child and adult alike as the definitive symbol of the confident female. And now she has her own collection of MAC makeup.

Wonder Woman MAC compactWonder Woman MAC lipstickThe packaging seems a bit plasticky, but plays to the retro-chic aspect of the Amazon princess character while also maintaining a youthfulness. Additionally, a number of the items in MAC’s collection are super-sized, with “jumbo-big” powder blushes and “oversized” lip gloss causing their makeup counter competitors to seem downright diminutive. Product names range from the appropriately-chintzy “Secret Identity” copper lip gloss and “Mighty Aphrodite” peach/pink/gold powder blush to the assertive “Obey Me” red nail lacquer and “Deep Truth” dark blue eyeshadow right along to the melodramatic “Themyscira” blue mascara and “Invincible” mirror (no word on whether this is actually unbreakable, though at $20 for a pocket mirror I would hope it can withstand a drop or two).

Potentially the coolest items in the collection are the brush sets (both “eye” and “face” varieties) which come in these shimmering gold utility belts you can actually wear:

The limited edition collection should be available at retailers nationwide from mid-February through mid-April and is bound to be an unabashed hit amongst fans of Gabriel García Márquez and Jersey Shore alike (and yes, we are aware of the overlapping audience, as those people are our circle of friends). The brand identity features marvelous original art by Mike Allred, including a comic book about Wonder Woman defending Plain Janes the world over from Medusa’s “drab ray.”

And finally, because we are incapable of hearing or seeing the term “MAC” in relation to makeup without playing this song in our heads, please enjoy Lil Mama’s grade school hip hop jam, “Lip Gloss.” Amazons be poppin’.
