Indie Game Spotlight: Glorg

By / Posted on 09 November 2010

GlorgExplore winding caverns! Battle ferocious monsters! Collect loot and upgrade your weapons! All with exactly one button!

Let’s take a step back, shall we?

A popular trend in the recent history is indie game design has been the one-button game. This is exactly what it sounds like, a game with exactly one method of input, meaning that all actions are executed by the same player command. While the concept has been around for a while, it really caught on with the release of Canabalt, Adam Atomic’s one-button platformer wherein the player controls a man running across rooftops away from some unspeakable apocalyptic horror just off-screen, tapping the button to jump. The free web browser game (developed in five days) proved so popular that an iPhone port was released and became one of the most popular games on Apple’s portable devices.

Flash forward two years and here’s Martin Jonasson‘s one-button dungeon crawler, Glorg. All the fun of your traditional action RPG with just one button!

Yes, everything in Glorg is controlled with the simple click of a mouse. Found some loot? Click once to pick it up. Moving to another room in the cave? Click and hold to walk. Do the same to explore the new room. There’s no controlling which room you enter first, which enemies you attack first, any decision-making is made for you except the affirmative decision of taking action, whatever that action may be. Sounds simple, but the real charm comes in the battle system. A simple click will cause you to swipe your weapon at an opponent. Clicking when the enemy raises their weapon allows you to block their attack. Clicking and holding causes you to charge up the strength of your attack, leaving you open to attack until you release the button to unleash your one-button fury. Enemies get smarter and tougher as the game progresses, so that mouse button of yours is likely to get a bit of a workout.

It’s not the deepest game in the world, but considering the limitations of a one-button, browser-based flash game, Glorg is a stunning achievement, and charming to boot. Atmospheric music by Danny B. (Canabalt, Super Meat Boy) doesn’t hurt things either. Play Glorg for free at Armor Games now.
